•   A spur gear is a cylindrical disk with straight, radial teeth on its outer circumference, used to transmit power and rotational motion between two parallel shafts. They are the most common and simplest type of gear and are often called "straight-cut gears". 

Key characteristics

• Spur gears are known for their simple design, which makes them easy and cost-effective to manufacture and install. Their straight teeth are cut parallel to the axis of rotation and engage across the full width simultaneously. Designed for parallel shafts, they do not produce axial thrust, simplifying bearing design. Spur gears offer high efficiency, typically between 95% and 99%, and maintain a constant velocity ratio between shafts. 

Disadvantages

• A drawback of spur gears is that the simultaneous meshing of teeth can cause significant noise and vibration at higher speeds. This full-line contact also results in higher impact stress on the gear teeth. 

Types of spur gears

• External spur gears: The most basic type, with teeth on the outer surface. Two external gears mesh and rotate in opposite directions.
• Internal spur gears: These have teeth on the inner circumference of a ring, used in confined spaces, causing the mating gear to rotate in the same direction.
