COUNTER SHAFT

  • A countershaft, also known as a layshaft or jackshaft, is an intermediate shaft in a gearbox or transmission that runs parallel to the main shaft. It is used to transfer power, change the speed and torque, and sometimes reverse the direction of rotation between an input shaft and an output shaft. 

How a countershaft works

  1. Receiving power: A gear on the input shaft, which is driven by a power source like an engine, constantly meshes with and drives a gear on the countershaft. This causes the countershaft to rotate.
  2. Transmitting power: The countershaft has a series of fixed gears along its length. These gears constantly mesh with corresponding gears on the main shaft. The operator selects a gear ratio by engaging a specific gear on the main shaft with its counterpart on the countershaft, which then transfers power to the output shaft.
  3. Changing speed and torque: The different gear ratios created by the gears on the countershaft allow the transmission to adjust the output speed and torque. For instance, a smaller gear on the countershaft meshing with a larger gear on the main shaft will increase the torque while reducing the rotational speed.
  4. Changing direction: In many manual transmissions, a reverse gear is added to the countershaft to reverse the direction of rotation of the main shaft. 


     


 



Applications
Countershafts are critical components in a variety of mechanical systems, especially those that require variable speed and torque output. 

  1. Manual transmissions in vehicles: In a car's manual gearbox, the countershaft is the central component that allows the driver to select different gears.
  2. Industrial machinery: Countershafts are used in many different types of machinery, including lathes, tractors, and heavy construction equipment, to transmit and modify the power from the motor or engine.
  3. Power take-off (PTO) systems: In farming and industrial applications, a PTO shaft that provides power to an auxiliary machine is a form of jackshaft or countershaft.
